Love it or hate it, social media has changed our world and it’s here to stay. It can be used to create connections, to encourage, to share, to entertain, to inform, to build and so much more. Social media brings people together.

It’s a tool and like other tools, social media can be used for good purposes, or for bad. It can be used to build or to destroy. It depends on who is wielding the tool and how they choose to use it. Yes, there are trolls, bullies, and those who promote hatred, lies and false news.

But there are a lot more people who choose to use social media for good. And that’s worth celebrating!

Connect with others

Use social media to connect with friends and family, especially those who live a long way away or those you don’t see often. Or use it to reconnect with people you’ve lost touch with, like old school friends or work colleagues. You can even connect with complete strangers, for example, in a shared interest group – join an existing group or start your own.

Update your friends with details of important events and celebrate milestones. Share holiday snaps, videos and travel stories. Post photos from your latest shopping trip or info about new toys, new tech or other things you’ve bought. Put in a good word for a tradie or service provider that you’d like to recommend. Explore your creativity with stories, poetry, music, and the arts. Discuss books, movies or games. Celebrate your favourite sports team’s latest win or commiserate with other fans when your team loses. Share recipes and life tips. Circulate jokes and make others laugh.

It is also a tool you can use it to organise events like birthday parties, anniversaries and reunions, or to organise sporting teams or groups that meet in person. You can publish and distribute information and resources to selected individuals or groups, or to the whole world.

Make a stand

What do you stand for? Whatever it is, you can use social media to make a stand. Announce what you stand for, or perhaps who you want to stand alongside. Promote things you are passionate about and protest issues that concern you. Use social media to make a difference in your world.

For example, some incredible women used social media to promote online initiatives to support rural businesses in bushfire affected communities in 2020.

Promote your business

Business owners can also benefit from using social media. Promote your business and your brand and connect with your customers and clients. Build relationships with existing and potential customers. Use social media to get to know your customers and find out what they really want.
